Avery was like a typical eight year old girl in so many ways. She was a caring and artistic soul who loved Selena Gomez and Harry Potter, and dreamed of learning how to surf. However, Avery battled something no nine year old should ever have to face. A Brain Tumor.
Even though her world was flipped upside down, Avery always had a positive attitude. She kept up with her art, even creating multiple pieces to raise money for cancer research.
Deciding on her one true wish took a lot of thought and consideration—there were so many things that would give Avery hope and encouragement. But it was Disney World that stole her heart. Her love of big, fast rides, the Disney characters and everyone’s favorite teenage wizard made it a perfect choice. It even had a place Avery could learn to surf!
Avery and her family left a cool and cloudy Washington and arrived in sunny Florida on Mother’s Day 2013. They checked into their Polynesian-themed hotel and the adventures began. Avery got to meet all of her favorite super heroes, get a Dole Whip whenever her heart desired, and learn to surf (which she realized was a lot harder than it looks!) While whizzing through Space Mountain, Avery’s mom heard her laugh-a true, deep belly laugh-and realized she couldn’t remember the last time she had heard her daughter’s genuine laughter. It was in that unforgettable moment that she fully understood the power of a wish.
Avery was only 13 when she passed away in June 2016, but her light continues to shine through her artwork.
